The Port Byron Historical Society will meet on February 11 at 7:00pm at the River Valley District Library in Port Byron.
February is the month when we have our annual business meeting with the election of officers for the year. It is also the time to renew your membership for another year.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, but not much has been reported about what was going on in our area of Port Byron, Rock Island County, and Illinois from 1776 until Illinois statehood in 1818 and the establishment of Port Byron in 1828.
The program, “Area History from 1776 to 1828”, will be a talk by PBHS President Dale Hachtel about the activities of the new country and the colonies which became the United States, and how several states had claims on what eventually became Illinois and Rock Island County.
Come to the meeting and learn about the U. S. political regions and divisions that eventually resulted in Illinois and Rock Island County.
