Green Superheroes 2030 Documentary Screening
Get ready for Earth Day by watching and discussing this award-winning film! Green Superheroes 2030 features a group of ten young individuals, aged between 5 and seventeen, who are dedicated to making the plant greener. The film highlights their innovative projects and initiatives aimed at addressing pressing environmental issues, such as microplastic pollution, recycling, and renewable energy.

Ukulele Club for Kids
Join River Valley District Library for our beginner friendly Ukulele Club! Bring your own ukulele or use one of ours. We will be learning the basics and working together to learn a song! Ukuleles are a fantastic introduction to instruments, teaching children rhythm and chord structure, while being simple enough that kids as young as 5 can play! Uke can do it!
Shred-It Day
Got papers piling up? Stop by Shred It Day and safely dispose of your unwanted documents! The Shred-It Truck will be on-site to handle large quantities of paper. No need to remove staples or paper clips. Just bring your boxes and bags of documents and Shred-It will take care of the rest! Have any questions about what can or cannot be shredded? Galena Bus Trip
Sip Sip Hooray, It’s Derby Day, grab your hats and join us for a day trip to Galena. Our visit will start at Galena Goat Yoga for a cup of coffee, featuring some special animal guests. Then, we will head over to the Ulysses S. Grant Home for an engaging historical tour. After that, we will be dropped off downtown for 3 hours of independent shopping and lunch time. Finally, we’ll “wine down” with a complimentary glass at the award winning Galena Cellars Vineyard. Tickets are $50 per person, and payments must be made by April 17th. One Act Play Director Search
River Valley District Library is excited to host a One-Act Play program for students! Applications for student directors are due by Wednesday, May 6. Participants may choose to write their own short play or collaborate with library staff to select an existing script.
Selected directors will receive guidance from library staff to refine their original work or choose a pre-written play that fits their vision. Directors will also partner with staff to cast their productions through auditions held Wednesday May 27th.
Throughout June and July, students will bring their productions to life during weekly rehearsals on Wednesdays from 3:30–5:00 PM. The program will conclude with a public performance on July 31, where directors and their casts will showcase their hard work.
Playing With Purpose
Join us at the River Valley District Library with a physical therapist to learn about the benefits of using play to promote strength, balance, and mobility to help children reach their developmental milestones. We will discuss the developmental milestones and ways to keep movement fun and engaging.
*All ages are welcome! Games and activities will provided for children who attend with their caregivers.

Stop the Bleed Training
STOP THE BLEED® is a national campaign to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. It is a public/private partnership led by the Department of Defense and many other stakeholders.
Marybeth Eggers, a member of the Stop the Bleed Coalition, will be leading this class on emergency response preparedness. Attend this program to receive the skills and hands-on practice you need to stop a life threatening bleed until emergency personnel arrive. This program has limited capacity, and registration is required for attendees.

One Act Play Actor Auditions
River Valley District Library invites students to audition for this summer’s One-Act Play program! Auditions will be held on May 27th, and are open to students interested in acting in one of our student-directed productions.
No prior acting experience is necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to try something new! Participants may be asked to read from a script and take part in simple group activities during the audition process.
Students selected for a cast will spend the summer rehearsing on Wednesdays from 3:30–5:00 PM throughout June and July, working together to prepare for a public performance on July 31.
Come take the stage, meet new friends, and be part of a creative and collaborative theater experience!

Tween Scene: Bullying Prevention
Join us for an important and empowering program led by two local Girl Scouts working toward their Silver Awards! Diane Morford and Audrey Gibney will share their knowledge and passion for bullying prevention with younger students.
Through engaging discussion and activities, kids will learn what bullying is, how it affects others, and what they can do to stand up for themselves and help create a safer, kinder community.

In this 8-week workshop, kids and teens will turn their ideas into real, published books.
This program is all about choice and creativity. Writers can create whatever inspires them, including graphic novels, picture books, chapter books, poetry collections, or short story anthologies. The workshop will provide these authors time to write, share, and give each other feedback in a supportive group setting.
In the final weeks, we’ll polish and prepare each project for publication. Library staff will format books for Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), and during our last session, families will help their child upload their books and hit “publish”!
No writing experience is necessary. Every participant will leave a published author, and will be acknowledged at the reading and signing at the end of the Summer.

Let your creativity bloom at the library with our DIY Chia Pet and Nature Art program for kids! Explore the beauty of the natural world through fun, hands-on art projects.

Local Mushroom Identification with WAPSI
Join Naturalist Becky Baugh from the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center and learn how to identify local mushrooms and which seasons and habitats they can be found. You will also learn recipes and ways to preserve the mushrooms for future use.

Tween Scene: Art Roulette
Take a spin on creativity with Art Roulette! In this fast-paced, collaborative program, participants will start their own piece of art—then pass it along for someone else to continue. Watch your creation change and grow as it moves around the room, with each person adding their own unique touch.
You never know how your artwork will turn out, and that’s part of the fun! This program is all about creativity, surprises, and letting go of perfection. This program is open to tweens age 8 – 12.
Cakefy It!
Get ready for a delightfully deceptive art experience! Join professional artist and baker Miss Alice for a hands-on workshop where creativity meets illusion. Participants will learn how to use lightweight spackling and cake decorating tools to transform everyday objects into realistic “cake” creations that look good enough to eat (but definitely aren’t!).
Miss Alice will guide you step-by-step through techniques for piping, texturing, and adding decorative details, helping you turn ordinary items into eye-catching works of art. Perfect for teens and adults of all skill levels, this program is a fun way to explore mixed-media art and learn something totally unique.
Plushie Faux Taxidermy
Give old plushies a cute new life in this fun, creative program for teens! In this hands-on workshop, we’ll turn stuffed animals into unique decorative wall mounts using simple crafting techniques and lots of imagination. Participants can mix and match colors, fabrics, and accessories to create something totally their own. All materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own beanie-baby sized plushies if they prefer. It’s a playful way to reuse old favorites and make something new to display and enjoy!

Skippy The Drum Machine: A Music Show For All Ages
Plant a seed of music! “Skippy The Drum Machine” is an educational concert showing how music is made through the voice, body, and beatboxing, the art of making drum sounds with your mouth. Led by Luke “Skippy” Harbur, you’ll learn something new, make silly sounds, wiggle your body, and leave with tools for how to make your own music! No experience necessary: no matter your age, this program proves we are all smarter, kinder, and better together!
