We have two new additions to our Junior's Section- say hello to
Adrian and Isabelle, our resident chinchillas! They are 2-3 years
old, and will live to be 10-20 years old, so they will hopefully be
with us for a long time.
Chinchillas make great pets- they are friendly and love to be
petted. They like to play at night and rest during the day. They
are very soft- while humans have only one hair per follicle,
chinchillas have more than 50! When you first approach the
chinchillas, hold out your finger for them to sniff before you pet
them. We must all be careful not to poke or scare them when
we pet them, and we must not feed them anything but
chinchilla food so that they don't get sick.
Chinchillas originally lived in the foothills of the Andes mountains
in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, but are rarely found in the
wild today.
