Port Byron’s first library began with 12 books in the home of Almoret
Alford. Later it was moved to the old Methodist Church Parsonage.
Simonson family donates the land and the building at 106 N. High Street
in memory of Mr. And Mrs. William Devore, Rose Simonson’s parents.
Former Port Byron Township Library converts to the District Library form
of organization and expands service area to include all of the Port Byron
Fire Protection District.
Library Board purchases site for a new building at 214 S. Main Street
Library Board commissions building plan, hires architect Tevis Freeman
of Moline, and applies to Illinois State Library for $250,000 building
grant.
Notification of grant award from Illinois State Library received.
Agreement with State Bank of Port Byron for $440,000 construction
loan and $340,000 15 year mortgage obtained.
Target of at least $150,00 in charitable contributions for new building
set.
